Medway Hospital Report Reveals Bullying, Racism, and Urgent Call for Change

An independent review at Medway NHS Foundation Trust has uncovered serious workplace culture issues, including bullying, racism, and discrimination. The review focused on staff experiences at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham.

The report, published Friday, revealed that some staff faced threats and grievances after reporting discrimination. Others pointed out a lack of ethnic minority representation in senior leadership. While some teams were described as supportive, others were marked by cliques, unfair workloads, and offensive banter.

Jonathan Wade, interim chief executive, issued an apology. “We are deeply sorry. There is no place for bullying, racism, or toxic behaviour at Medway. We are determined to create a safer and fairer workplace,” he said.

The review heard from 415 staff members, with 40 reporting racism or discrimination. Despite issues, many praised the hospital’s strong focus on patient care.

Recommendations include easier ways for staff to raise concerns and stronger accountability for leaders. The trust has already begun improvements, including a trial of body-worn cameras in some areas.
